Bindery Worker

Job Summary:

Under the direction of Bindery Supervisor, this position is responsible for assisting operators and other team members in project set-up, quality control, and project completion.

 

Essential Functions:

1.      Perform job duties and conduct self in accordance with Allen Press, Inc. core values.

2.      Read project specification sheet to determine setup specifications and instructions.

3.      Retrieve project signatures for collator machine setup.

4.      Arrange signatures onto collator tables in appropriate order.

5.      Examine finish product for defects such as imperfect bindings, ink spots, torn or loose pages, etc.

6.      Remove, stack and wrap finished product for warehousing in accordance with specifications.

7.      Record production activities and times in timekeeping system (Covalent) according to protocol.

8.      Stock inventory as needed.

9.      Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Education/Experience/Abilities:

1.High School diploma or equivalent required.

2.Experience operating a pallet jack and power lift preferred.

3.Previous bindery work experience preferred.

4.      Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others required.

5.      Ability to communicate clearly and professional, both verbally and in written form, required.

6.      Ability to maintain excellent attention to detail required.

7.Ability to interpret instructions or specifications, in verbal or written form, including those dealing with dimensions, quantity, and machine setup.

8.Demonstrate basic addition/subtraction computational counting skills.

9.Demonstrate understanding and application of standard, metric, and pica measuring units.

10.  Demonstrate basic mechanical ability in order to understand machine setup, function, and troubleshooting.

11.  Ability to perform moderate to heavy levels of physical exertion requiring frequent lifting (approximately 50 pounds) and work requiring constant and/or repetitive motion (grasping, bending, standing, lifting).

12.  Maintain a safe work environment in accordance with Allen Press safety protocol and OSHA standards by wearing assigned protective equipment and reporting any actual or potential safety hazards to the Human Resources Safety Coordinator or supervisor.

13.  Ability to work overtime as needed.

14.  Ability to work in a noisy production environment that is fast-paced and team-oriented.


Charlesworth Coordinator

Job Summary:

Process and track production jobs sent to and received from typesetting vendor. Coordinate the onboarding and transitioning of new and existing titles to the typesetting vendor’s conventional workflow. Interface with the typesetting vendor’s development team to research and resolve errors resulting from problems with the tagger, style tool, and templates. Assist with in-house typesetting production as necessary.

 

 

Essential Functions:

1.   Perform job duties and conduct self in accordance with Allen Press, Inc. core values.

2.   Ensure typesetting vendor has all necessary job components to complete and deliver quality work in timely

      manner.

3.   Efficiently operate office equipment necessary to send and receive to and from typesetting vendor all

      electronic and hard copy job components.

4.   Quality check all materials returned from the typesetting vendor to ensure Allen Press personnel have all 

      relevant job components to proofread, print, and post online.

5.   Track jobs and coordinate with both internal and external departments to keep them on time.

6.   Upload and check final pages to RIP platform.

7.   Communicate with typesetting vendor to solve problems and keep production moving.

8.   Eliminate systematic paging errors following the Process/Technology Errors Protocol.

9.   For in-house titles, enter corrections to text, tables, and math as marked by proofreaders or editors.

10. For in-house titles, re-key lines, typeset occasional new type.

11. Fulfill special requests from supervisor.

12. Recognize and report need for procedural changes.

13. Keep supervisor abreast of scheduling problems.

14. Bring problems/issues to attention of supervisor.

15. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Experience/Qualifications:

1.   Bachelor’s degree preferred.

2.   Background in computer programming, mathematics, science, copyediting, proofreading, or printing.

3.   Practical experience typesetting with desktop systems, though 3B2 software preferred.

4.   Practical experience with markup languages (SGML, XML).

5.   Familiarity with proofreading/copyediting instructions preferred.

6.   An aptitude for a second language preferred.

7.   Ability to work in a schedule-sensitive, team environment.

 

Cognitive/Physical Requirements:

1.   Great attention to detail.

2.   Ability to follow written and verbal directions.

3.   Good communication skills, both written and verbal.

4.   Must be able to sit for long periods of time.

5.   Must be able to lift 10lbs or less on a regular basis.


Check-in Clerk

Job Summary:

The Check-in Clerk will ensure that mail list files and mailing and shipping specification sheets that have been prepared for the purpose of mailing and shipping bound printed materials are properly organized and are ready to be sent to the packaging equipment and Shipping department. In order to properly carry out the functions of the job, the Check-in Clerk will understand the workflows of the Packaging and Shipping Departments and how they relate to the United States postal system.  

 

Essential Functions:

            1.            Perform job duties and conducts self in accordance with Allen Press, Inc. core values.

            2.            Ability to read and understand the job specification sheet/work order.

            3.            Ability to organize and prioritize incoming mail list files from the Allen Press List Management department.

            4.            Ability to communicate in a timely and organized manner mail list availability to the Packaging Lead.

            5.            Ability to check for and report errors related to discrepancies in work orders and mail list files.

            6.            Assist the List Management, Packaging, and Shipping departments as needed in resolving errors related to work orders and mail list files.

            7.            Ability to comprehend basic United States Postal regulations.

            8.            Contribute toward providing a positive and productive work environment.

            9.            Follow safety rules and regulations.

        10.            Perform other duties as assigned

 

Experience/Qualifications:

            1.            Experience working with USPS preferred.

            2.            Experience in a production environment preferred.

            3.            Experience with MS Office (Word/Excel), email software and 10-key required.

            4.            Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

            5.            Must be self-directed, team-oriented.

            6.            Ability to multi-task and problem solve in a fast-paced environment required.

            7.            Must have a keen eye for detail.

 

Cognitive/Physical Requirements

            1.            Ability to hear, communicate, and respond to different Allen Press departments coherently.

            2.            Ability to handle very detailed work.

            3.            Ability to sit, walk, bend, lift, stretch, stoop, and perform overhead and lateral reaching tasks.

            5.            Ability to file in both high and low file drawers and shelves.

Supervisor, Editorial Services

Job Summary:

Candidate performs supervisory duties for Editorial Services; Copyediting coordinators, Proofreaders and Table/Math Technicians.  Duties include overseeing editorial work flow, prioritizing work, problem-solving workflow issues, providing feedback and training as necessary, meeting with new and existing customers, and demonstrating company core values.

 

Essential Functions:

1.      Perform job duties and conducts self in accordance with Allen Press, Inc. core values.

2.      Supervise a team of copyeditors, copyeditor coordinators, table/math technicians, proofreaders, assistants, and contractors.

3.      Monitor workflow to ensure that jobs are being done in a timely manner.

4.      Set the goals, priorities, and tone of Editorial Services.

5.      Assess current states of Editorial Services: quality of copyediting and proofreading, the relationship with other areas, the number of in-house personnel versus the work coming into the areas, and the effectiveness of day-to-day procedures.

6.      Continually examine industry standards for contractor rates and working conditions and suggest any necessary changes to help Allen Press, Inc. remain competitive.

7.      Assist the copyediting and proofreading coordinators with the following tasks:

1.      Monitoring of the contractor pool in relation to existing and foreseeable work flow.

2.      Recruitment of copyediting and proofreading contractors as needed.

3.      Development and maintenance of effective procedures for evaluating potential and existing proofreading and copyediting contractors and in-house employees.

4.      Delivery and maintenance of training materials to existing and new personnel and contractors.

8.            Provide Manager of Content Processing and Editorial Services with regular status reports covering the\

        status of Editorial Services projects and individual performance.

9.            Participate in on-site and off-site meetings with customers as needed.

10.            Consult with prospective customers and evaluate sample journals to determine the level of edit needed; advise proposal team.

11.            Travel as needed to conferences and seminars to keep abreast of current state of publishing industry in relation to copyediting and proofreading.

12.            Be willing to support company decisions and follow through to ensure completion.

 

Non-Essential Functions:

1.      Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Experience/Qualifications:

1.      BS or BA in Science, English, Technical or Business Communications, Journalism or related field preferred.

2.      1–2 years of experience in supervision or equivalent experience.

3.      1–2 years of experience in scientific publishing, editing, or equivalent field.

4.      Understanding of basic contracting principles.

5.      Ability to resolve a range of problems associated with a deadline-oriented environment.

6.      Ability to cross-train and learn other tasks that affect the copyediting and proofreading areas.
